Former Fianna Fáil National Executive member Michael O’Brien has this week resigned as a member of the party, deciding instead to run as an Independent candidate in this year’s Local Elections.

The storm may have passed but the work has only just begun for both Galway city and county councils which now face the daunting task of assessing the full extent of the damage. A report is due to be sent by both local authorities to central Government next week seeking emergency funding which is vital if the necessary repairs are to be carried out.

Fianna Fáil Galway city councillors have called for the immediate reinstatement of Sunday burials in the city following the recent Government announcement that some 3,000 additional workers are being allocated to local authorities across the country under the 'Gateways Initiative'.

Castlebar is not a pedestrian friendly town and something needs to be done about the town's roundabouts, according to local Fianna Fail area rep, Lisa Chambers. "I was shopping around Tesco in Castlebar during the week and trying to navigate the roundabout to get to Boots was a nightmare," said Ms Chambers. She contined: "I noticed a mother with a pram and actually stopped to observe how she could cross the roundabout and it was with great difficulty. She almost had to use the pram as a traffic stopper. The speed with which cars are travelling though this roundabout is much too fast and traffic calming measures are needed.

The €1.1 million purchase of the Galway Airport site is likely to be delayed for a number of months while Galway City and County councils carry out a feasibility study.

The recent convention of South Westmeath members of Fianna Fail saw four candidates put forward for the 2014 local election.

“It smacks of ‘Candle In The Wind’ by Elton John!” the source said. “Colm Keaveney is all over the shop. I don’t know of anybody in Fianna Fáil who agrees with this.”

Suspicion and not enthusiasm in local Fianna Fail circles, has greeted the entry into the party of controversial TD Colm Keaveney, who had been seeking the move since early September.

Derek Reilly, well known Belmullet businessman, has been elected as the 2014 president of JCI Ireland (Junior Chamber International). Mr Reilly recently returned from Japan Leadership Academy and the JCI Malta National Convention where he was the guest speaker and trainer.
